Look at your child, not just the number
A fever is usually a sign that the body is responding to an infection. How your child is breathing, drinking and behaving matters as much as their temperature. Use a digital thermometer and note the reading and time.
Offer frequent fluids, allow rest and keep clothing comfortable. Ask a clinician or pharmacist about suitable fever medicine and the correct dose for your child’s weight. Never give aspirin to a child.
When to get help
A baby under three months with a temperature of 38°C or higher needs urgent medical assessment. Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, unusual drowsiness, a seizure, a stiff neck, a rash that does not fade when pressed, or signs of dehydration.
If a fever persists, your child seems increasingly unwell, or you are worried, speak with a doctor. Do not wait for a WhatsApp reply in an emergency.
